MARY LAKE:THE FINAL RESTING PLACE
REDDING LIFESTYLES, SHASTA COUNTY
December 1st, 2008
Last Monday, my wife and I were doing our duty as Adopt-A-Park volunteers when I noticed a long 15′ continuous line of ashes in the bushes along the Mary Lake walking path. I thought this was an odd place for someone to dump their BBQ or fireplace ashes. Then a go
lden shimmer caught my eye and I used my trash grabber to pick up the small metal tag stamped with the name of a local funeral home and an identifying number.
We concluded that this was someone’s decision to have
Mary Lake Park as their final resting place. Once we got over the morbidness of human ashes being spread next to one of the feeder creeks for the lake we were proud that someone chose a spot so near and dear to our hearts as their eternal burial grounds. Apparently someone enjoyed the beautiful setting of this neighborhood park so much he or she wanted these ashes to reside there forever.
Of course, it is possible the family member who was in charge of the cremations decided that this was the place the ashes were to be dispersed. I don’t know if Redding’s Park Department has any law against this but I would prefer a spot a little more off the beaten path in case a dog needs to hike a leg or make a deposit of their own!
