DERSCH HOMESTEAD INCIDENT SPARKS KILLINGS

SHASTA COUNTY
October 2nd, 2008

Just east of Redding, near Millville Plains, is the Dersch Homstead. Bear Creek meanders through canyons below rock covered plateaus on its journey to the Sacramento River. In 1850, “Doc” Baker established this ranch as a stopping point for immigrants on what was called the Nobles Trail. In 1861, George and Anna Marie Dersch bought out Baker and homesteaded the land. Renamed the Dersch Place and/or Dersch Station, they farmed the rich, volcanic creek bottom loam soils, growing potatoes and other vegetables.

Tenants of the Dersch’s were responsible for whipping Native Americans that were supposedly stealing potatoes while working the potato harvest. This was never proven, but the Indians retaliated by raiding the property, fatally wounding Anna Marie. The actual cause of death was never known.  In response, a posse was formed that hunted down and killed most of the Indians at their Dry Creek camp. The volunteer militia began hunting and killing innocent Indians at the Jelly’s Ferry, Cottonwood and Millville Indian Rancherias.

Today, a historical marker sits in front of the old ranch house near the Bear Creek Bridge on aptly named Dersch Road. Drive 5.5 miles east on Dersch Road from Deschutes Road to find the monument.

As a side note, I have 160 acres near the old homestead listed for sale. The 1/4 section of land lies 2.5 miles northeast of the ranch house. It is priced at $265,000.
