REDDING SEES SPIKE IN MOTORCYCLE DEATHS

REDDING LIFESTYLES, SHASTA COUNTY
September 13th, 2008

Blame it on high gas prices or stupidity, there is no denying this has been a bad year for local motorcycle deaths. It seems like every week or two someone is dying or being seriously injured while riding their bikes, sometimes foolishly.

Yesterday, a motorcyclist was speeding at speeds estimated to be 145 MPH on I-5 in an attempt to evade law enforcement. He got away, but paid with his life.

A preacher was on his way to Susanville last month to minister to inmates when he hit a deer crossing the highway and crashed and died. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A couple weeks ago, another young man was allegedly trick riding on his motorcycle on the way to work in an industrial park in north Redding when he lost control and hit a truck and died instantly.

Another young man in early July was riding a crotch rocket up and down Placer Street in downtown Redding in the wee hours of the morning when he lost control hitting some parked cars. He was thrown more than a hundred feet up the road and died in the middle of the street from traumatic injuries.

Another motorcyclist was badly injured when he came around the corner on Hwy 299 near Whiskeytown Lake recently, lost control and hit a semi head on.

Here’s some motorcycle stats:

  • A 1% reduction in speed equates to a 5% reduction in crashes
  • Excess speed is a main factor in one third of all collisions
  • Impact speed determines severity of injury- crash at 35 MPH you are twice as likely to kill someone as 30MPH
  • Road deaths account for 74% of accidental deaths for those 15-19 years of age
  • Your chances of being killed on a motorcycle are 42 times higher than in a car

In all the years I have lived here, I have never heard of some many fatalities of motorcyclists in such a short span of time. I don’t know about you, but I have seen many bikers riding recklessly so these events don’t surprise me. Popping wheelies, weaving in and out of traffic and speeding on residential streets are common sights these days. Like anything, there are a few idiots that give all riders a bad reputation. Bikers should think about how vulnerable they are and is it worth it to save a few bucks on gas while putting your life on the line.

I road motorcycles as a teenager but gave it up after losing several friends in high school. The thrill does not outweigh the danger in my way of seeing things. What do you think?

  2. buy stuff online

The blog was hands down an excellent read and I enjoy not crappy articles on the internet because a large amount is copied. I recognize that when your talking about material it’s pretty much King in terms of getting a website ranked and so on (undoubtely why I saw this). I’ve made some websites now and am working on an online micro jobs marketplace type webpage made for users to logon and buy and sell services to eachother. That being said I have to spend some time on writing some article content and other stuff on there and so forth. So anyway take it easy and continue putting out quality articles.

Hi. this is kind of an -unconventional- question , but have other visitors asked you how get the menu bar to look like you have got it? I also have a blog and am truly searching to alter around the theme, however am scared to death to mess with it for fear of the search engines punishing me. I am extremely new to all of this …so i am just not positive specifically how to attempt to to it all yet. I’ll just keep working on it one day at a time
