NEW PALM TREES PLANTED IN HILLTOP DRIVE MEDIAN
LOCAL GOVERNMENT, REDDING LIFESTYLES, SHASTA COUNTY
September 10th, 2008
Despite complaints from many local residents that had their own suggestions for what type of trees should be planted on Hilltop Drive, semi trucks loaded with palm trees arrived and the trees are being planted as I peck at my keyboard. The palms come full grown with a large square root ball of sand.
A crane lifts the trees and drops them in to the designated holes dug in advance. The size of the root ball, approximately 6′ square, anchors the trees from falling over. Now when you look down Hilltop Drive you see a neat row of palms that reminds me of soldiers at attention.
The beautification project includes undergounding all the utility lines and adding landscaping on both sides of the street and new planters in the medians. The project is progressing rapidly and should be done by next year.
Although the palms may not provide as much shade as some other leafy trees commonly planted as ornamentals around Redding, it will let visitors know they are in California! Watch out for falling palm fronds during windy days.
