REDDING:TRAIL CITY USA!
LOCAL GOVERNMENT, REDDING LIFESTYLES, REDDING RECREATION, SHASTA COUNTY
August 13th, 2008
Shortly after American Trails, a national non-profit organization, came to Shasta County for their National Trails Symposium in 2000, the group decided to relocate to Redding. American Trails works on behalf of all trail users: hiking, bicycling, mountain biking, horseback riding, water trails, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, trail motorcycling, ATV’s, snowmobiling and four-wheeling. Since Redding, Shasta, Lassen, Trinity and Siskiyou Counties have venues for all these activities, it’s no wonder American Trails picked Redding!
Last week the Record Searchlight reported a planned trail connecting the $23 million Sundial Bridge, that crosses the Sacramento River in downtown Redding, to the Trinity Alps, a jagged wilderness area, two hours drive west of Redding in Trinity County. I’ve noticed a tremendous amount of new trail construction in and around Redding. Early on, the Sacramento River Trail, with its stressed ribbon bridge at the north end provided a brisk 5-mile walking loop or easy bicycle ride. Mountain bikers can use the trail to access challenging spur trails in the canyons above the Sacramento River. Major road work underway in Redding at the HWY 44/ I-5 interchange will provide additional extensions of the river trail to Dana Drive and Bechelli Lane.
North of Redding, a segment of trail was recently built connecting North Redding to Shasta Dam. On the west side of Shasta Dam is a huge ORV area also popular with mountain bikers and location of the annual Lemurian Bike Race. The Swasey Recreation Area, under BLM control, has just completed a loop that begins with The Escalator, a steady 2 mile grade to Mule Mountain summit, where a picinc area for hikers and bikers only is situated. Continue the loop by following the fun downhill return trail known as the Terminator to the point of beginning. For advanced riders, start at Mary Lake Park in Redding, (visit Mary Lake Virtual Tourhttp://vt.realbiz360.com/MLS-62708.html and hop on the Westside Trail and follow the ridge west to the Swasey Recreation area. If your legs aren’t wobbly yet, continue from the picnic area to Whiskeytown Lake via a connector trail to Muletown Road. Take a dip and return on one of many trails back to Redding.
If you don’t like to share your trail with bikers, Whiskeytown has several trails for hikers only. Davis Gulch Trail near the dam, Whiskeytown Falls and the Camden DitchTrail are but a few. Stop by the visitor center for a complete list. Don’t forget to buy a daily permit or risk getting ticketed!
I appreciate the forward thinking individuals and organizations that have laid the groundwork for a comprehensive trail system that will serve the north state well for generations to come. If I can help you find any of these trails or if you have a real estate need, don’t hesitate to contact me:
