REDDING ONE BENEFICIARY OF McCONNELL FORTUNES

REDDING LIFESTYLES, SHASTA COUNTY
August 12th, 2008

Carl and Leah McConnell

Carl and Leah McConnell

Carl and Leah McConnell were successful entrepreneurs involved in real estate and business partnerships during their 50 years together. They had no children. Carl inherited a stock portfolio from his parents that included significant shareholdings in the Farmers Insurance Group. Starting with $1 million in seed money upon Carl’s death in 1985, then a major infusion of $42 million from a trust containing those stocks and Carl’s estate, the McConnell Foundation today has assets of about $425 million. Leah McConnell began giving out significant amounts of money in 1989. The north state, including Redding, have been major beneficiaries of generous sums for community improvement projects,  including a major contribution toward the world famous Sundial Bridge.

The Foundation is headquartered in east Redding on the Lema Ranch. A beautiful administration building overlooks a lake with views of the stunning natural beauty that surrounds Redding. The Ranch has a network of trails open to the public. The Foundation has also donated money to build many biking and walking trails  throughout the Redding Area. Recent Grants include:

  1. $250,000 to complete the Jennifer Skuce Pavilion in McArthur,
  2. $1,000,000 for Round Mountain’s Hill Country Health and Wellness Center,
  3. $400,000 to construct the Weed Community Center

The mission of The McConnell Foundation is helping build better communities through philanthropy. I, for one, appreciate all the Foundation has done for this area and around the world. I can’t help but think about the McConnells everyday I walk the trail around Mary Lake. This, after all, was one of the first trails in Redding the Foundation paid to pave. Thank you McConnell’s, what a wonderful legacy to your uncommon generosity!
