REDDING CITY MANAGER GIVES TALK TO REALTORS
REDDING LIFESTYLES, SHASTA COUNTY
August 8th, 2008
On Wednesday, August 6, 2008, Redding City Manager Kurt Starman led a discussion with area Realtors interested in developments in the Redding community. Mr. Starman holds an economics degree along with other degrees and loves to talk shop! As Redding’s city leader, he sees some difficult times ahead before things get back on track. Revenues from sales taxes are down and the city will be tightening their belt at an upcoming budget review. However, he pointed out that past leaders and councils have been fiscally conservative placing the city in a good position to weather these tough economic times. Unlike our close neighbor to the south, Chico, our budget problems are minor in comparison. Mr. Starman is well aware of other cities around the state that are in dire financial straits. He mentioned the bankruptcy facing the city of Vallejo as an example.
On the bright side he pointed out public works projects the city is undertaking to prepare for future growth. A new addition to the city’s power plant is under construction that will bring power generation capabilities to 200 megawatts. The city has contracted for a long term supply of natural gas to fuel the power generators needs.
The Buckeye Water Treatment Plant, which serves the northwest part of Redding, is nearly doubling its water treatment capabilities. More water means more waste so the Clear Creek Sewage Treatment Plant in also in the midst of doubling its capacity. Work is also underway to build the first phase of Stillwater Business Park.
The more noticeable projects city residents are aware of include widening Bonnyview Road in south Redding, the huge Cypress Bridge project over the Sacramento River and the Hwy 44/I-5 interchange enhancement project. Combined, these projects will allow our main arterials to better handle increased traffic in coming years.
Mr. Starman fielded questions from the audience and discussed the Airport Road/Hwy 44 automall, updates on the Oasis Road/Interstate 5 Specific Plan, future road extensions and widening and the fact more money would be spent in the near future repairing city streets. Also discussed was the proposed county impact fee and the FIX5 project being promoted by local transportation agencies.
