WHY MOVE TO REDDING?

REDDING LIFESTYLES, SHASTA COUNTY
July 29th, 2008

Twenty five years ago I graduated from college and had to decide where I wanted to live. I was fortunate to have traveled the western states extensively and liked the natural beauty, clean air, proximity to mountains, lakes and rivers that surrounds Redding. Whiskeytown Lake is popular with the locals due to it’s refreshing crystal clear water, sandy beaches and full-to-the-brim water level during the summer months. Snorkeling is a favorite pastime of mine, due to high underwater visibility and schools of fish that populate the lake.

Lake Shasta, 10 miles north of Redding is popular with house boaters, water sports enthusiasts and bass fisherman. Lassen National Park is just an hour drive east of Redding. Here, easy to moderate day hikes can take you to the top of Mt. Lassen, the Bumpass Hell geothermal area with geologic features comparable to Yellowstone and dozens of lakes for fishing, canoeing and swimming. Backpacking is a popular activity too, including a segment of the Pacific Crest Trail that bisects the park.

Less than an hour’s drive north of Redding lies the beautifully rugged Castle Crags State Park with its’ granite domes and spires, camping, hiking and gold panning opportunities. Just north of Castle Crags is Mt. Shasta which features alpine climbing, winter skiing and a snowmobile park. McCloud has numerous waterfalls on the nearby McCloud River near the huge private estate of the famous Hearst family and the famousĀ Shasta Dinner Train which serves a gourmet dinner while you ride the rails on a scenic tour of the beautiful natural surroundings.

Redding is surrounded by many less trampled areas including the Trinity Alps (pictured above, outlet of Grizzly Lake), Yolla Bolly, Russian, Caribou and Thousand Lakes Wilderness areas. The tall coastal redwood groves are only 2 hours drive west of Redding along the rugged California Coast. It is not uncommon for local Redding residents to go fly fishing on the Sacramento River during their lunch hour, raft to Anderson on the river on a day off, stroll the miles of trails including crossing the world-renowned Santiago Calatrava masterpiece Sundial Bridge.

Mountain biking is very popular in all these areas due to an ever- expanding network of trails that connect Redding to Whiskeytown and Shasta Lakes. Besides the plethora of recreational activities, Redding offers a place to raise your family or enjoy retirement with low crime, no gangs or graffiti, clean water and air and mild winters and warm summers. Now you know the answer to the question I posed. Even after traveling elsewhere in our beautiful country, I’m always glad to call Redding home!
