California Realtors are working toward developing a statewide Multiple Listing Service (MLS). Currently, more than 70 separate MLS’s serve the real estate licensees across the state. This creates problems for Realtors that work in locations where adjoining cities and market areas overlap requiring agents to be members of more than one MLS to receive data on listings. The statewide MLS or CALMLS as it has been named, allows any Realtor to access listing data for properties anywhere in the state. This will increase exposure of listings from the local MLS to over 185,000 Realtors across the state.

CALMLS will be owned and controlled by California Realtors. Soon, your agent will not only be able to provide information on local properties in your area but any property listed in California. The system is under construction and the vast majority of MLS’s across the state have signed on to participate once the system is in place. This is a major change for Realtors that historically protect their market areas. Agents typically shy away from representing a buyer or seller that wishes to buy or sell a property outside their area of expertise. CALMLS will allow agents to provide information to clients about property outside of their market area and could refer the client to an agent in that area. The projected launch of CALMLS is early 2009.
